Jamaica: 93-Year-Old Woman Raped, Hospitalised

(JAMAICA GLEANER) — Residents in St Ann have reacted with anger at news that a 93-year-old woman was raped at her home in Keith district in the parish on Wednesday night.

The St Ann police, who confirmed the incident, said the woman is undergoing treatment at the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital, under watch from a team of detectives from the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) and the Brown’s Town police.

They, however, declined to divulge further information on the case, citing the sensitive nature of the matter, and referred The Gleaner to the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the communication arm of the police.

Police personnel remained in the community for several hours on Thursday as speculation spread as to the identity of the perpetrator.

Reports reaching The Gleaner indicate that the woman was alone at home when the incident happened. Relatives who returned home around 4 a.m. made the discovery and notified the police.

Reaction to the incident was emotional.

“A madness dis!” said one woman of the nearby town of Discovery Bay. “Last week, dem dump baby inna toilet. Now, dem rape old woman. Jesus, help us!” she added, referencing last week’s incident where a baby was dumped in a pit latrine in the St Ann community of Esson Castle.
