Sandals Grenada Resort Takes Leadership Position In Sustainable Practices

PR – In an important milestone, Sandals Grenada Resort & Spa has achieved Gold status through EarthCheck, the world’s leading business advisory group specializing in sustainability and destination management for the travel and tourism industry. This achievement marks five years of continually meeting the mark in integrating recommended best practices that encourage environmental awareness and sustainability, as evaluated by EarthCheck.

Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International, applauded the team, noting “Sandals Resorts has long held environmental sustainability as part of its core mission with all our resorts charged with implementing and managing sustainable programmes including the installation of solar water heaters, retro-fitting of light and equipment for better energy performance and efficiency, and the composting of food waste.  Love is at the crux of all Sandals Resorts and this love extends through to our care and commitment to preserving our environment in the many islands we are connected to. We are immensely proud of the team at Sandals Grenada for this achievement.”

Environment, Health & Safety Manager for the resort, Alifa St. Paul shared, “I would like to congratulate our Sandals Grenada team for continuing to engage in our sustainability initiatives through the Sandals Earth Guard Corporate Sustainability Policy. This accomplishment does not mean we stop the buck here, but our charge to continue to maintain our benchmarked status under the EarthCheck programme, and continue engaging our guests, suppliers and stakeholders.”

Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, also extended congratulations, “I would like to congratulate the entire team at Sandals Grenada on their achievement. Sandals Resorts is a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference.”

Sharing further on the resort’s sustainability practices, St. Paul added, “Our Corporate Sustainability Policy is extensive and fully integrated into every element of the resort’s operations. Specific effort is made to monitor and mitigate the impact of our daily operations on the surrounding community and the environment. These include but are not limited to freshwater & energy conservation; waste management programmes for solid waste & wastewater; reducing and eliminating the use of hazardous substances; responsible purchasing practices; reduction of greenhouse gases through reduced CO2 emissions; preservation of land and fragile ecosystems; focused community development and cultural preservation; and the employment of qualified local personnel in keeping with our existing human resource policy.”

On the importance of these standards, Operations Manager for the resort, Jamie Charles proclaimed, “Our Company understands that it has a major responsibility to champion the cause for environmental sustainability. Coastal countries such as Grenada are currently under threat from the devastating effects of Climate Change, so it is especially important that we do our part to mitigate against this and educate our team members so that they can transfer the knowledge into their communities. We are absolutely proud to achieve the Gold Standard and are fully committed to continuing all of these sustainable practices in every aspect of our Operation.”

By working with EarthCheck, Sandals Resorts stands with other industry leaders who are taking meaningful steps towards resolving some of the very real issues that face the planet.
