Rare Tornado Slams Into Northern Haiti, Several Injured And Left Homeless

(CMC) — More than 50 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, and over 200 homes destroyed when a rare tornado slammed into the community of Bassin-Bleu, to the north of Haiti on Tuesday.

According to the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 300 families were impacted.

The office said Haiti’s civil protection agency and the Red Cross were the first responders and are evaluating the damage.

The civil protection agency said heavy rain is expected for most of the French-speaking country, including the area hit by the tornado, warning of possible flooding and landslides.

Meanwhile, with the onset of the rainy season, the UN has warned of growing risks from waterborne diseases such as cholera, particularly for people who are displaced.
