Grenada-Born Calypso Icon The Mighty Sparrow Dies At 91

The Caribbean is mourning the passing of legendary calypsonian Dr. Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow, who died peacefully in New York on Sunday, September 27, 2026, following a brief illness. He was 91.

While Sparrow became synonymous with Trinidad and Tobago and its Carnival culture, his story began in Grand Roy, St. John, Grenada, where he was born on July 9, 1935. He migrated with his family to Trinidad as a young child, but his Grenadian roots remained an important part of his identity and legacy.

Grenada formally celebrated its famous son over the years. In 2012, Sparrow was honoured in his birthplace of Grand Roy with a cultural celebration, the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and a roadside portrait. At the ceremony, then Governor-General Sir Carlyle Glean praised Sparrow for placing Grenada’s name prominently on the world stage.

Known internationally as the “Calypso King of the World,” Sparrow enjoyed a career spanning more than seven decades. He wrote more than 500 calypsos, produced more than 70 albums and captured numerous Calypso Monarch and Road March titles. His catalogue included classics such as Jean and Dinah, Dan Is the Man in the Van, Obeah Wedding, Congo Man and Federation.

His music went far beyond entertainment. Through humour, satire and powerful social commentary, Sparrow addressed Caribbean politics, colonialism, relationships, education and everyday life, helping to take calypso from the Caribbean to audiences around the world.

Among his many honours were an Honorary Doctor of Letters from The University of the West Indies, the Order of the Caribbean Community, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and an OBE for his contribution to culture.

For Grenada, Sparrow’s passing represents the loss of one of the country’s most internationally celebrated cultural sons — a man born in the small community of Grand Roy who went on to become one of the most influential figures in Caribbean music history.
