PR – The Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy today hosted an orientation and collaborative planning session with youth-focused organisations and relevant partners to support the ontinued expansion of the Youth in Action for Climate Change Adaptation School Awareness Campaign.
Launched in June 2025, the campaign engages students from pre-primary through secondary school in age-appropriate activities designed to help them better understand climate change, its impacts on Grenada, and the actions that individuals and communities can take to adapt.
The orientation session, held at the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Conference Room at the Ministerial Complex, formed part of the Ministry’s efforts to build partnerships that can extend the reach of the campaign and strengthen the capacity of youth organisations to support climate change education in schools and, eventually, through extracurricular and community-based activities.
The session opened with remarks from Permanent Secretary Ms. Peron Johnson, who emphasised the importance of partnering with active youth organisations to expand the reach of the campaign, strengthen engagement with young people, and support climate action in schools and communities. This was followed by remarks from Mr. Clive Murray, Programme Specialist (DRR & Climate Change), UNICEF, who highlighted UNICEF’s contribution to Grenada’s NAP process, particularly in supporting the integration of child sensitive considerations. Dr. Roxanne Graham-Victor, National Climate Change Adaptation Officer, then provided an overview of Grenada’s Revised National Adaptation Plan (NAP) 2025–2030 and its connection to the country’s wider development and climate resilience priorities
Participants represented the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) Grenada, Caribbean Youth Climate Council (CYCC), Akata Farms, United Nations Children’sFund (UNICEF), 195in365 Be the Change, the T.A. Marryshow Community College Environmental Awareness Movement (T.E.A.M.), the St. George’s University Education Conservation Outreach (ECO) Club, and RCC Caribbean. They were introduced to the approaches currently being used under the school awareness campaign, including interactive climate change presentations, storytelling with preschool-aged children, the use of props and visual aids, the telling of Grenada’s “water history”, creative writing and poetry, student enactments, creative poster-making with climate change messaging, and other participatory approaches designed to make climate change relevant, understandable and engaging for different age groups.
The orientation also created a space for participants to propose additional ideas for strengthening the campaign and to discuss how their respective organisations could contribute to future school outreach activities. Participants were invited to identify the training, educational materials, resources and other forms of support that would be needed from the Ministry to facilitate their involvement.
Through this collaborative approach, the Ministry aims to develop a wider network of individuals and organisations equipped to support climate change awareness and action among Grenada’s children and young people.
The Youth in Action for Climate Change Adaptation Campaign supports implementation of Grenada’s Revised NAP by helping to translate national climate resilience priorities into practical learning experiences that encourage young people to understand the challenges facing their communities and recognise the role they can play in building a more climate resilient Grenada.
