PR – Terry Connor has been appointed as Head Coach of Grenada’s Senior Men’s National Team. He was welcomed to Grenada and formally introduced at a press conference held on Monday 15th May at the Grenada Football Association (GFA) Secretariat.
Connor comes with 25 years of senior Coaching and Management experience under his belt – in the Premier League, English Football League, the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus.
His experience is underpinned with a 15-year playing career in topflight football with Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Swansea City, Bristol City and the English U21 team.
One of Connor’s greatest achievements is being Head Coach and First Team Manager for Wolverhampton Wanderers and securing promotion from Championship to the English Premier League. He has coached other teams including Blackpool FC, Cardiff City, Ipswich Town and Bristol City.
President of the GFA Marlon Glean welcomed Mr.Connor and laid out his expectations for the new head coach. “ We expect Terry to improve the level of our National team and ensure we play at a higher standard and critically we expect him to use his experience and knowledge of the game as well as his connections to help develop our young coaches.” said Glean.
Connor whose father is from St.Kitts said it is important for him to give back to the Caribbean. “I hope to leave something positive and Grenada in a better position than today. We are presently at 173 in the rankings, so we have some work to do to get back to 88 or even better.” said Connor.
As Head Coach, Connor’s first order of business is preparation for the Gold Cup prelims match against Guyana on June 17 in Florida. The plan is to hold training sessions at 9am and 6pm at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium and Cricket Stadium. Additionally, there will be two (2) upcoming camps; the first will see overseas based players flying in to join local players to evaluate their level and the second camp will be held in the US, one week prior to the match against Guyana on June 17.
As it relates to how the team will be chosen, Glean said, “All players will start from zero in vying for place in the 23 man squad.”
Connor added that, “both overseas and local players will have a chance to prove themselves and at the end of the day, I will choose the best 23 players to represent Grenada.”
The GFA expressed its heartfelt appreciation to Anthony Modeste who served as Interim Head Coach over the past few months. His service as a Coach and player is exemplary and well known. He now reverts to his position as First Assistant Coach. Modeste and the other Senior Men’s Staff are expected to learn under Coach Connor’s tutelage.
