Toddler Drowns; Swept Away By River In St Vincent

(LOOP NEWS CARIBBEAN) – Tragedy in St Vincent and the Grenadines as the body of a child, who was just one month shy of his second birthday, was found floating offshore in the vicinity of Arnos Vale yesterday.

Police are investigating the death of little Malachi Ballantyne, who was one year and 11 months old.

According to investigations, about 11:30am yesterday, police at the Criminal Investigations Department and the SVG Coast Guard Service were alerted to a report of a missing child.

The child was suspected to have been swept away by a river located next to his Upper Cane Hall home.

The SVG Coast Guard Service responded to the call and mounted a patrol about 100 metres offshore in the vicinity of Arnos Vale where the unresponsive body of a child was discovered floating in the water.

The body was taken back to the Coast Guard Base in Calliaqua where it was identified as little Malachi. He was pronounced dead by the District Medical Officer.

A post mortem examination is expected to be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

Investigations into this matter are ongoing.
